- 16How to play Gonzo’s Quest: quick answers
To play Gonzo’s Quest you set one total stake between €0.20 and €50, press spin, and let the stones fall: any win on the 20 fixed lines explodes, new symbols drop in and the multiplier climbs. Three Free Fall scatters on the first three reels open 10 free spins with a higher multiplier track. The rest of this page walks through each control and feature in the order you meet them.
Step 1: open the right game
Search the casino lobby for “Gonzo’s Quest” and check the tile before you click. Several games share the name, and only the 2010 NetEnt original uses a five-reel, three-row grid with 20 lines. A six-column screen means you have opened Gonzo’s Quest Megaways from Red Tiger or the 2025 sequel, both of which play differently.
Once the game loads, the stonework grid appears with Gonzo standing beside it. Nothing about the animation affects results; the outcome of each drop is decided by the game’s random number generator.
Step 2: choose your stake
NetEnt’s page lists a bet range of €0.20 to €50.00 per spin. Because all 20 lines are always active, the single number you choose is your full cost per round. There is no separate line selector to forget about.
| Stake per spin | Cost of 100 spins | Biggest possible single round (2,200x) |
|---|---|---|
| €0.20 | €20 | €440 |
| €0.60 | €60 | €1,320 |
| €2.00 | €200 | €4,400 |
| €10.00 | €1,000 | €22,000 |
| €50.00 | €5,000 | €110,000 |
Pick a stake that lets you afford a few hundred spins of your session budget. Dividing the budget by the spin cost tells you how long you can expect to keep playing; a €30 budget at €0.20 is 150 spins before any wins come back.
At a crypto casino the stake box may show coin amounts. Convert one spin back into your home currency once, write it down, and you will always know what the next click really costs.
Step 3: read the paytable
Open the menu inside the slot to see the paytable. It shows each symbol’s reward at your current stake, the shapes of the 20 lines and the rules for wilds and scatters. Values update as you change the bet, which makes this screen the quickest way to compare a small and a large stake.
NetEnt does not publish symbol values outside the game, so we do not repeat any here. What matters for your decisions is the structure: the paytable separates higher-paying and lower-paying symbols, wins are formed by matching symbols along a line, and the help screen lists the return to player for that build. It should read 95.97%, the figure on NetEnt’s page.
Step 4: follow an Avalanche
Instead of spinning reels, Gonzo’s Quest drops fifteen blocks into place. When a line pays, NetEnt’s Avalanche mechanic kicks in: winning blocks explode, the stones above fall into their places and new stones tumble in from the top. If that new arrangement forms another win, the cycle repeats.
Every Avalanche raises the Win Multiplier shown at the top right of the grid. In the main game the meter tops out at 5x. Once a drop brings no new win, the round ends and the meter returns to its starting value for the next spin.
Worked example: a three-step chain
Say you stake €1.00. The first drop forms a line worth €0.30 at the starting multiplier. Those blocks break and the fall creates a second win of the same base size, now paid at a higher multiplier. One more Avalanche pays again, at a still higher level, before a fourth drop misses. Your round has paid three times from one stake, and each payment was bigger than the one before even though the base wins were identical. The exact amounts follow the multiplier values on screen.
- Step 11×
A line pays
Three matching stones from reel 1 to the right. The win is paid at the current multiplier: 1×.
- Step 21×
Winning stones break
The paying stones are removed and leave gaps in the grid.
- Step 31×
Stones fall into the gaps
Stones above drop down and new ones fall in from the top. No new stake is taken.
- Step 42×
The grid is checked again
Another line pays, so the chain continues at 2×. When nothing pays, the round ends and the multiplier resets.

Each Avalanche in a chain climbs one step
Base game
- 1×First win
- 2×Second
- 3×Third
- 5×Fourth and later
Free Fall
- 3×First win
- 6×Second
- 9×Third
- 15×Fourth and later
Steps as set out in NetEnt's rules for the original 2010 game. A spin with no win resets the track. Check the help screen of the copy you play (source 1).
Step 5: use the wilds
Wilds land as huge stone blocks. NetEnt states that they substitute for any paying symbol on a line. In this game they also fill in for the Free Fall scatter, which means a wild on reel 2 or 3 can complete a bonus trigger that would otherwise fall one symbol short.
Step 6: trigger Free Fall
Three Free Fall scatters on reels 1, 2 and 3 start the bonus. You receive 10 free spins at the stake that triggered them. The multiplier track during Free Fall reaches 15x instead of 5x, so chains here are worth far more than in the base game.
More scatters during the bonus retrigger it and add free spins. When the round ends, the total is added to your balance and the game returns to the main grid.
Worked example: same chain, Free Fall multipliers
Take a base win of €0.25 landing when the bonus meter already sits at its 15x top level. That single payment becomes €3.75. Repeat it on two more cascades and the spin returns €11.25 from a €1.00 trigger stake, without any increase in symbol value. Long Free Fall chains are how players approach the game’s 2,200x cap.
Step 7: auto-play, turbo and sound
Most casinos expose NetEnt’s auto-play option, which runs a set number of spins with stop conditions such as a loss limit or a single win above a chosen size. Use those limits if you use auto-play at all, because the game will otherwise keep spending at the same pace. Some regulated markets switch auto-play or turbo off, so the buttons you see depend on where the casino is licensed.
On-screen terms decoded
| What you see | What it does |
|---|---|
| Bet or stake box | Total cost of the next spin, covering all 20 lines |
| Win Multiplier bar | Shows the level applied to the next cascade win; 5x cap in the main game, 15x in Free Fall |
| Free Fall symbol | The scatter; three on reels 1 to 3 start the bonus |
| Wild block | Replaces paying symbols and, in this title, the scatter |
| Balance | Your account funds in the casino currency, which may be a coin |
| Menu or info icon | Opens paytable, rules and the RTP for that build |
Five mistakes first-time players make
- Mixing up versions. Free spins credited to the Megaways game will not appear in the original, and the other way round.
- Raising the stake after a loss. Each drop is independent; doubling up only shortens the session.
- Ignoring a bonus max-bet rule. Spinning above the limit while a welcome offer is active can cancel every win made with it.
- Counting small hits as profit. Many paying spins return less than the stake, so the balance can fall while the screen keeps flashing wins.
- Leaving auto-play without stops. Always set a loss limit if you use it.
A simple session plan
Here is one way to structure a first real-money visit. Decide on €20 as the full budget and €0.20 per spin, which gives 100 spins of runway. Stop if the balance halves to €10, and also stop if it reaches €40, banking the profit. Check the clock after twenty minutes and take a break regardless of the result. None of this improves the odds, yet it keeps the session at the size you planned instead of the size the game invites.
Playing on a phone or tablet
NetEnt’s own data lists the game as HTML5 for both desktop and mobile. On a phone it opens in the browser or inside the casino’s app with the same grid, rules and RTP. Controls move to the side or bottom of the screen in landscape mode, and the menu icon still gives you the paytable.
- Use landscape for a larger grid; portrait works but shrinks the stones.
- Turn on the casino’s session reminders, since phone play is easy to stretch out.
- Keep the browser updated; very old versions may not load modern NetEnt builds.
Desktop or mobile: which is better?
Results are identical on both, because the same server-side game decides every drop. Desktop gives a larger view of the multiplier bar and paytable, which helps while you learn. A phone is handier for short sessions but makes it easier to keep tapping without noticing the time, so pair it with the casino’s reality-check reminders.
Do you need to download Gonzo’s Quest?
No. Early online casinos often required a downloadable client or the Flash plug-in, and Adobe ended Flash Player support on 31 December 2020. Today’s version runs directly in the browser, so a casino that asks you to install unknown software just to play this slot deserves suspicion.
Playing online for real money
Real-money play needs an account at a casino that carries the game in your country. Registration usually means an email, a password, date of birth and later identity checks before withdrawals. Crypto casinos follow the same pattern but accept coin deposits to an address shown in the cashier. Our guide to crypto casinos with Gonzo’s Quest covers deposits, licence checks and which lobbies we confirmed.
New to the game? Run it in demo first using the routes on our free play page. If you plan to use a welcome offer, read how bonus terms apply to Gonzo’s Quest spins before you deposit, because maximum-bet rules can void winnings.
A short review: how it plays today
Played in 2026, the 2010 original feels light and fast compared with modern high-volatility releases. Most rounds end quickly, small cascades are frequent thanks to the 41% hit rate, and the bonus is the clear goal. Its limits are plain too: a 2,200x top prize and no buy-feature button. For players who want bigger swings, the sequel and the Megaways version exist; for those who want an easy-to-follow classic, this one still holds up. For the maths behind those swings, see Gonzo’s Quest odds and RTP, and for an overview of all versions start at the home page.

How to play Gonzo’s Quest: quick answers
How many paylines does Gonzo’s Quest use?
Twenty, and they are fixed. You choose only the total stake; every spin covers all 20 lines.
What is the smallest and largest bet?
NetEnt lists 0.20 euros as the minimum and 50 euros as the maximum per spin. Casinos show the equivalent in your account currency, which may be a crypto unit.
How do I trigger the Free Fall feature?
Land three Free Fall scatters on reels 1, 2 and 3. The round gives 10 free spins, and more scatters during it add further free spins.
Do I need to download anything to play?
No. NetEnt lists the game as HTML5 for desktop and mobile, so it runs in a normal browser or inside a casino app without a separate download.
Can wilds help me reach the bonus round?
Yes. NetEnt states that wilds in this game can also fill in for Free Fall scatters, as well as replacing any paying symbol.
Does the multiplier carry over to my next spin?
No. The meter builds only while one Avalanche chain continues, and a spin without a win resets it.
